Open PDFs from Chrome directly in Foxit PDF Editor

Explains how to configure PDFs to open directly in Foxit PDF Editor when clicked in the Chrome browser.

Answer

You're here because you would like to click on a PDF in Google Chrome and open it directly with Foxit PDF Editor Windows Desktop Application.

To do this, you will need Foxit PDF Editor as your system default PDF viewer and make some setting changes in Google Chrome. (IT Admins can use Google Chrome's GPO to tweak these settings for the entire enterprise)

1.Enable Automatic Downloads of PDFs from Chrome. here's how:

  • On your computer, open Chrome.
  • At the top right, click More (three dots) buttons > Settings.

  • Search for "PDF" in settings
  • Click on "Site Settings"
  • Click on "Additional Content Settings"
  • Click on "PDF Documents"
  • Turn ON the option to 'Download PDFs' instead of opening the PDF file in Chrome.

Changing this setting will have Chrome automatically download PDFs instead of opening on a new tab.

2. Turn on the "Always open with system viewer" feature.

  • After the PDF file is downloaded, Google Chrome will pop up the Recent download history to show you the file that has just been downloaded. If you missed the "Recent download history" prompt mentioned above, please navigate to the "Download" button in the top right corner of Google Chrome to open it.

  • Right-click on the downloaded PDF file in the Recent download history, then select the option "Always open with system viewer" in the context menu that pops up next. After performing this operation, any PDF files downloaded from Google Chrome in the future will automatically be opened by your system's default PDF viewer after the download is complete.
